We have completed the first prototype of the Patient data input device for a clinic in Malawi, Africa in conjunction with UNCEF. It is for a clinic for malnourished children that is underfunded and understaffed. It leads the user through a series of questions to input about the patient while audio files explain whats going on to the mother of the child in their language. The sequence of questions depends on the data input after the child is registered and given a ID. Most of the data depends on a MUAC number standard measured from the child’s upper arm circumference. Its also for the user to check on signs of edema and other signs of malnourishment and overall health ending with a “diagnosis” of if the patient needs further treatment – see the doctor, supplementary nutrients, or is OK to go home. The prototype was build from mdf and contains a 4×4 keypad, 16/2 LCD, arduino + integrated mp3 player, amplified speaker and is powered from a 9v rechargeable battery.

All the technology is open-source and much of the programing had to do with creating a multi-tap keyboard interface and then programming the data work flow tree of about 30 different questions and 5 different “diagnosis”.

We are getting ready to begin the second version that will intergrate a cell phone module to take the stored data file send it via the cell phone network to database in captital hospital and have the data verfied with a responce as well as have it dynamically reprogrammed.
